What I'm Up To

In my last post, I described an experiment in which I produced an abstract tree that I found interesting. Today, I offer another image from that series. I also wanted to mention what I have been up to, but first, the photo!

So, what have I been up to? You might have noticed that my website has a dated appearance. That’s because I designed it many, many years ago. And for the last few weeks, I have been working on a brand-new website. Here is the nitty-gritty, for those that might be interested.

Squarespace, which is my site host and whose website design software I use, has progressed to a completely new version since I designed the original site. But there is a problem using the new version, in that there is no way to completely migrate the current site to the new version. More specifically, and confirmed by a discussion with their tech support, that means that if I moved to the newest version, I would lose all the blog posts I have written since 2007. That’s probably 1000 posts or more. Hard to believe that it has been 17 years since I started my blog!! But shame on Squarespace for not putting a method of migrating to the new version in place. That said, they apparently have no plans to discontinue support for my version (7.0), but they also are not going to be adding any new features to it.

BUT…I can make very significant site improvements and also come very close to emulating the newest version by redesigning the site using a different template available from the old version. And that is exactly what I have been working hard at. That work has thus far been done in the background, without it being published or visible to the public. But that only goes so far, because when you go live, all sorts of weird and unexpected stuff can and does happen with a template switch. So rather than continue working and then, when finished, announce a new site only to find that things don’t look right or work correctly, I am going to make the site live in a day or two, while I am still working on it.

But wait. Don’t look at the new site yet. It isn’t ready. Nothing to see there :) Just look at the new blog page for the next post, because that is ready at this point. I will announce when the whole new site is good to go, and I would love for you to explore it and give me some feedback at that point. I think it will have a much more updated look and feel—at least I hope so.
