Riding The DC Metro

I recently had the opportunity to visit Washington DC, and while I was there I rode the city’s Metro (subway) to get from one location to the next. Back in the immediate post 9-11 days, taking photos in a subway is something that was not particularly advisable, as you were very likely to have a guard or police officer ask you what you were doing and why. But, on this particular instance, I had just missed my train and it was going to be another ten or fifteen minutes before the next one arrived.

The DC metro is actually quite photogenic, so I took out my iPhone and started to take some pictures. And a funny thing happened. Despite the fact that there were people in all the photos I took with the phone………nobody seemed to care. So I started to wonder about taking out my dSLR with a 24-70 lens that was in my bag. I thought that would be a whole different story since that setup looked far more serious. But, emboldened by having asked the fisherman to take his photo, I decided to go for it. And once again nobody really seemed to care even though it was obvious to some of the people that they were going to be in the photo, even though the photo wasn’t ‘of them’.

Then, I decided to shoot from the upstairs viewpoint, which is closer to where the entry to the subway was, and I was sure some official might question me. After all, since I had been stopped or been told to stop photographing many times on the streets of downtown Pittsburgh, I was sure I would be asked to cease and desist here as well. But, again, nobody seemed to care.

And so I am able to offer you a view of the DC Metro!

And because I’ve been trying to take a bit of iPhone video here and there……the action shot :) (which won’t come along if you receive these posts by email).
