Photomontage

Another new technique that I have been exploring is photomontage. To construct a photomontage, you make several different versions of a photograph and then either digitally or physically cut sections out of each photo and arrange and combine them to generate a completely new one.

While this is likely the easiest of the techniques I have been learning to do in terms of the actual construction, it is also the most difficult (at least for me) to get an appealing artistic result. I am posting my first digital attempt below. And while I don’t think it is a particularly compelling result, it is a starting point. My first attempt at doing this manually was a complete disaster, not from the standpoint of cutting up the images but in getting an appealing result. This is definitely a technique that requires the right image and the right amount of tearing or digital cutting, but based on what I have seen when done well can really create unique pieces of artwork.
